The Electric Volkswagen is Finally HERE...

Today we have our first look at the Volkswagen ib4 electric vehicle. This is Volkswagen's first foray into the electric vehicle space. They're a huge brand, a huge automaker with a lot of history, and now they're here to play with the futuristic electric cars. I love seeing traditional brands get involved and embrace the electric future. So what is the id for? As far as I can tell, you've been driving around in the Volkswagen id4. This is your first encounter with an electric vehicle, so I wanted to sit you down and get some comments on how it differs from a gas vehicle. This is a significant difference, and the main impression I got was that it was silent.

It was a breeze. 

I'd like to start with the keys because I'm holding them. This thing feels kind of like a smartphone. As soon as I picked it up, I was like hmm that's pretty solid it's got a heft to it it's got kind of a traditional car feel to it with some futuristic touches. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so because as the transition to electric vehicles progresses, this is a good thing. 

When you look at this from the side, you can see that certain customers will be seeking for more traditional shapes and that certain customers will want things that their present traditional automobile has. You might be thinking, "Hey, that doesn't look all that exciting or different," but I believe this is all deliberate on Volkswagen's part, and what they're aiming for here is converting people who already have a vehicle that looks like this but are hesitant to have the full futuristic look of some of the other E vs on the market, so we're getting a larger selection here this version, that we have pro s has a fully illuminated front badge. 

Section of the grille here the headlights are pretty cool to look at as well you can see it's these little diamond patterns in there it sort of looks like an eyeball again it's subtle futuristic touches without having an overwhelming futuristic appeal of course because it's an electric car you can't have a typical handle you never see a typical handle it looks like it's going to be typical but Then it's just a button on the other side that functions when you reach for it. So here's another cool piece of white badging I like the white on black look they're going to use this branding likely the id portion for their variety of electric options the reason this is significant you're talking about a major automotive brand at times I believe they've been the biggest they may very well be the biggest right now at this moment as well as when they begin promoting.

With their electric vehicles being pushed through their massive dealer network, there will be a lot of folks with leases coming to an end, trade - ins, and so on who are contemplating electric that weren't even on the market before.

For whatever reason, we're ignoring or avoiding Tesla. Maybe they don't like Elon Musk or something. I'm sure there's like 50 million people on Twitter who adore him, so he probably doesn't mind. Anyways, we can hit that button, and we can also hit the key. That's a nice size cargo area, and I can see that the car was recently washed. I appreciate it because there are drops coming down is that because Willy Do has been commuting a little bit in this vehicle maybe he needs an interview maybe he needs an interview in this Blog we can ask him for some of his experience because I know he's been driving it living the electronic health records lifestyle ever so slightly we may have to grab him now this model you have here is the all - wheel drive we may have to grab him now this model you have here is the all-wheel drive.

It's around 300 horsepower, so did you have a little pep in your step? I noticed when I was turning I'd like to give her it felt really fast it felt like a really cushioned smooth ride but also a lot of torque incredible first of all though let's just do this I don't know what you're going to hide down there but you have a little more space. Then you reveal even more space by the way this is my first time seeing the interior this light colored interior where I felt like the exterior may have had a more traditional look to it at least this trim that I have in front of me the interior does bring the future to you so this is a little more covert you know when you're sitting in it and driving it, you're a futuristic human, but on the outside you're in stealth mode as you roll up to, I don't know, a children's soccer game.

You're like, yes, it's electric, don't worry about it, I'm just going to park over here, we don't even have to have a big talk about it, you don't have to praise me on my tesla like you can blend in, so some would get want to blend in, I'm thinking I don't know all right. 

Let's lower the chairs first, but first, what do we have in the center here, ah yes, some cup holders 

robust, fairly sturdy, and what does this handle do, well wonderful, then we can lower this seat and reach over.

Bring this one down to a 60/40 split and we're in cargo heaven. I don't care what you need to take or where you need to travel, you're probably going to be alright in this vehicle. So one heck of a trunk what do you mean I guess it's time that we jump in let's do it. Because we only get so many cars coming through the studio, it made sense to dive into our tool kit and take out the old insta360 to shoot some in car footage. Then I thought, why don't we just call out to the company and see if they want to sponsor this episode?

It's the default, which means you can coast or go into reverse. I actually like this selection since it's quite intuitive. It's not in the tesla plaid style of doing away of the gear selector nearly entirely save for the screen, but it's simple and practical. 

The display in front of me shows my range as well as my speed. This appears to be part of the support systems for keeping a safe distance from the automobile in front of you. We also get a sense for the cameras here. 

We can see which way the tires are now looking and which direction they're facing. It's not a large display, but it's adequate for alignment and volume. I'm going to put it back in park park is a button on the exterior here, so I simply linked my phone.

I see that there's wireless android auto, which is great, so obviously wireless android auto is the way to go. I'm going to go ahead and play some audio from this podcast here, and then the volume is in the center. You can tap in some fashion to increase the degree of volume, and I believe you can change the environment. 

If it's muted, it pauses the thing it knows you can't hear I've uh watched a couple Blogs and heard that we're lacking a little responsiveness here I'm hoping this is something that they can address uh maybe it's software based hopefully it's not due to hardware limitations now there are some dedicated buttons for parking climate your assistance features.

Then there's smart climate, which I don't like because I don't mind having warm feet warm hands chilly feet like you can that's not awful that's not bad sometimes you just want to get something done fast yes my hands are cold bang this is really cool 

This allows you to enable or disable specific assistance features, such as lane keep if I click on this car here lane change system side assist is active, I can turn that feature off from here so I can just configure it right from there can I click here as well oh yeah there you go front assist that's your emergency braking you have your advanced warning from early to late depending on what you want to do.

Windmill comfort is obviously going to be the most comfortable sport, and it'll make it a little bit more responsive. You also have custom options if you want to customize your own driving mode. 

ooh lighting, let's do lighting like any good electric car, we have a variety of lighting modes for the ambient mood lighting I set the mood, don't you know the bar has been set quite high because when we had those EGS in here it was like a hole it was like a nightclub in there wow what a spot to be in what a place to find yourself but we have some settings in here as well and let's cycle through them.

Basically, you're in charge of the light strip in front of, and surrounding, the doors.

Inside of this little compartment over here, but you can turn the lights back on all right yeah a little bit more about this uh wireless charging section when we had the ambient light on I noticed where it was I love this location it's got this sort of downward angle so your phone doesn't slide or move around also it's protected like it's kind of in there but still very accessible I know it

You could probably just change the direction of these look at that and then also close the whole thing up if you have I don't know stuff you want to cover up in there if it gets messy plus with wireless android auto, I never have to think about it like if I go back to the home page go back to android auto look at that lovely wirelessly plus 

Charging without wires 

This is also detachable, so you can simply take that and you'll have a huge bin there for whatever reason you want, but also my thought process in order to clean it out because things can become disgusting sometimes up here we have some reading lights. 

What do I do with the shade that comes across the panoramic roof? Oh, I just pull so it's touch sensitive and here comes the shade by the way, this is a large panoramic roof, which is another common thing we're seeing in vehicles, not just electric vehicles, but big piece of glass on the top there we go it's all closed up now the sun is out of the way and then we just slide back and there it goes.

Look at me in the back, and this isn't a big car, so I'm happy with the feeling of space here. So we have an I- pad in the bottom pouch, but you also have this little phone pouch, which I'm not sure if it's four phones, but it's perfect for a phone, and you also have chargers down here for those devices that now have a place to live in all right so the only thing left to check out. 

It's below this hood that I wish there was a front. I mean, frunks are great, but in my experience with frunk equipped cars, I don't really utilize them that much. I need to see an f 

150 frank that could revolutionize frunks forever. 

It's not over the top, it's not trying to be, it's understated, it's covert, it's an eave that doesn't shout at you that it's an eave, it just has these touches um.

ith a charge point so you can charge it pretty much anywhere fairly simple to use it's in the traditional gas tank location I think I prefer the front but it's not a huge deal so what is the story of the id4 it's a pretty understated electric vehicle I think it has a place in the market I think people need options so what is the story of the id4 it's a pretty understated electric vehicle I think it has a place in 

If the entire marketplace transitions to electric, some individuals will prefer a more umm accessible aesthetic. Not everything needs to seem like a spacecraft if you're searching for something more approachable.

 

If you want to feel futuristic, it's still there, but it's not slapping you in the face or sending you to Mars, and I think that deserves a place in the market, especially from an automaker with a long history and who appears to be more interested in converting people from gas cars than in stealing customers from Tesla, so this is the high trim level, this is the alpha trim level. 

Things depend on where you live, but it's pretty cool to see electric vehicles coming down in price and now coming from a variety of manufacturers including the world famous Volkswagen . The id4 trim level is pretty nice a fairly luxurious interior I noticed there were massage seats I noticed there was wireless android auto did you experience any of these Features

Nothing compares to being in the driver's seat of my old sedan; it feels like you're in a cockpit, like you're in mission control. How did you find the cargo space? I actually used the cargo space to transport some uh chairs and a table to my new house, so yeah, it threw me. Were they folded up or were they folded up?
